Hellaby . . . The Latest

The original planning application to demolish our former home, the Centenary Hall at Hellaby, and build houses was withdrawn. The bad news is that another application was submitted. According to Rotherham MBC website, the decision on the second application was due towards the end of March, but we've been monitoring the appropriate pages, and as yet, nothing has been published.

A claim for the refund of locksmith's fees incurred was submitted to the parish council at the end of January, but they deny having received it. The claim was resubmitted, acknowledged, and was discussed at their meeting on April 8th.

OUR CLAIM WAS REFUSED

Some time ago our members were canvassed as to what action to take should this happen, and the majority said that such a refusal should be put into the public domain to highlight how badly Bramley Council have been treating us. This will now be done.

Residents Award

The Hellaby Community Group have been recognised for their determined actions to retain their village hall for the community by a TARA Good Practice Award for 2007 from the Rotherham Federation of Tenants and Residents.

Hellaby . . .The Story So Far

For the benefit of newer members, and casual readers wondering what this is all about, here is a potted history.

Our former home, the Centenary Hall, is owned by Bramley Parish Council. They decided to sell it on the grounds that it was underused and making a loss, although it is known that they were actually turning away potential bookings. We were given 10 days notice to quit in May 2007 and at our next and final meeting there found the place boarded up!

We were allowed to store some equipment in an outside container, but arrived to collect it in November to find the container and all our equipment had disappeared. It was subsequently located on a sports field, but the keys had been lost (not by us - we never had our own key) and so it cost us £60 for a locksmith. As the necessity for this expense was of their making, we asked the council for a refund. Despite the likelihood of their pocketing over a quarter of a million pounds when the sell the hall, they refused!

This is the final nail in the coffin of what, prior to all this closure business, had previously been a good relationship with the council. However that relationship is now totally soured, and even if the hall were to reopen, it's doubtful we would return, unless of course it was under the ownership of a newly formed Hellaby Parish Council - but that's another story yet to unfold.

QRP Contest Contested

On Sunday 8th June a group of club members set up camp on Carr Hill to take part in the Practical Wireless QRP Contest. By the close of play, G4SKM

had worked 55 contacts in 16 IARU squares, which should give us around 800 points. Best DX was F1CBC/P in JO19 square, Normandy, and a couple of 0N4's in JO20. Stations in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales were also in the log. The lack of a rotator meant manual turning of the mast, not the best of jobs on a hot day, but all in all a great radio fun day.

Awards for All

Up to now the club has funded its activities with income generated by members in the way of subscriptions and donations from members, or sales of surplus equipment at rallies etc.

However, we would like to expand our public activities by way of attending shows, giving demonstrations, and involving local schools and organisations. So, we are working on a Lottery Grant application.

Exam Success

Congratulations to two club members on recently passing radio exams - John Wilson is now M3XQH, and Richard Taylor is now 2E0REX.
